CEC Thapaliya stresses need to update voters’ list before polls

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 13

Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya stressed the need to update voters’ list and coordinate among all stakeholders to review polling centres and stations to organise elections in a fair, free, credible, and economical way.

For effective management of the election, use of technology will be increased to execute works of the Election Commission as per its 3rd Five Year Strategic Plan, Thapaliya said while inaugurating a one-day training session for computer operators at district election offices in provinces 1, 2 and Bagmati Province on subjects related to voters’ list update.

“According to the Electoral Rolls Act, new registration of voters’ names in the voters’ list cannot be done at a time when elections have already been announced.

But errors in the voters’ rolls will be removed as per the provision for updating voters’ list for elections,” he said.

Stating that elections had strengthened democracy and helped maintain good governance and organising polls was the Election Commission’s constitutional responsibility, he said that the EC needed to eliminate voters’ list of errors and determine polling centres, stations in areas that were safe, accessible and undisputed.

The EC has urged all citizens to update their information in voters’ list at respective local levels.
