Chirs erected to mark Holi

The locals of Kathmandu and Patan erected chirs (wooden pillar) today decorated with colourful pieces of cloth to mark the festival of colours, Holi, is here.

The erection chir signifies the beginning of the spring season giving boys and girls a cultural excuse to have fun with each other in this orthodox society.

In Kathmandu, the chir is made of a three-tiered wooden pillar and is decorate with pieces of cloth. It is erected at Basantapur in front of the Kumari Ghar.

In Patan, the chir is made of a single medium size tree, w ith a few leaves. People hang new or old pieces of cloth in its branches.
