CIAA arrests two for receiving bribe

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority on Monday arrested Sub-Engineer Debendra Dev Shrestha, associated with Special Physical and Infrastructure Area Development Project, while receiving a bribe from office bearers of a local consumers’ committee of Lalitpur. According to a press release issued by the CIAA, Shrestha had sought bribe from the office bearers for approving the construction of the compound wall of Lalitpur-based Mahalaxmisthan Temple. Saroj Thapa of Katunje, Bhaktapur, was also arrested by the CIAA from Mulchowk Restaurant at Babar Mahal on charge of being Shrestha’s accomplice. The CIAA said it had recovered Rs 60,000 bribe money from Shrestha.

Elderly burns self

KATHMANDU: Bishnu Bahadur Khatri, 79, of Dakshinkali died after she burnt herself. The deceased is said to have self immolated by dousing petrol all over her body and torching herself. The reason why she burnt self is yet to be ascertained, said police, adding they were looking into the case.

Two aftershocks

KATHMANDU: Two aftershocks of the Gorkha Earthquake were felt on Monday afternoon. According to the National Seismological Centre under the Department of Mines and Geology, an aftershock measuring four on the Richter scale with epicentre close to Dhunche in Rasuwa district was felt at 4:10pm. Similarly, another aftershock measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale with epicentre near Namdu in Dolakha district was felt at 5:39pm on Monday. As many as 354 aftershocks measuring four or above on the Richter scale have been felt so far since the April 25 Gorkha Earthquake. More than 8,800 people were killed in the April 25 earthquake and aftershocks and more than 22,000 were injured. Tens of thousands of houses were flattened in the 14 most affected districts, including three in the Kathmandu Valley.
