KATHMANDU, AUGUST 14
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police has issued a public warning regarding a fraudulent mobile application named "Nepse AI." The bureau has received multiple complaints about a sophisticated scam targeting individuals through social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
Scammers are using these platforms to promote the "Nepse AI" app, promising users it will help them generate significant profits from the stock market. However, the CIB warns that this is a trap designed to steal personal finances and data.
According to a CIB statement, it has been reported that once a user downloads and installs the malicious app, it initiates a remote session, giving the criminals complete control over the victim's device. This allows them to instantly transfer all funds from the user's bank accounts to other locations. In a recent case, a person reportedly lost Rs 2.86 million. To hide their tracks, the criminals then remotely delete all data and applications from the victim's device.
The CIB has emphasized that the public must be extremely cautious and vigilant. "We urge everyone not to click on any suspicious links or download and install unknown applications, especially those like 'Nepse AI,'" CIB stated.
The CIB's warning highlights the growing threat of cybercrime where fraudulent apps are used to gain unauthorized access to personal devices and financial information.
It is usually recommended to only download applications from official and trusted sources such as Google Play or the App Store. The public is also advised to enable two-factor authentication on all online accounts and regularly change their passwords to enhance their digital security. The CIB has also urged public not grant remote access to the devices through applications like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or other similar remote desktop software.
The CIB urges anyone who has fallen victim to this scam to immediately contact their nearest bank, the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau, or other relevant financial institutions.
