CIJ reveals names of 55 Nepalis with illegal offshore investments

KATHMANDU: A team of Centre for Investigative Journalism collaborated with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists to investigate Nepali investments in foreign countries has revealed that Nepalis have saved a whopping 52bn in Swiss Banks.

The report states that Nepali account holders have ‘saved’ NRs 520,727,74000 in Swiss banks.

As many as 55 Nepalis have been found to have made investments across various locations around the globe.

It is to be noted that Nepal’s existing laws do not support offshore investments.

Likewise, those revealed to have engaged in offshore investments have been listed as follows :

  • Former lawmaker Birendra Mahato in association with Niraj Govinda Shrestha, Upendra Mahato, Romeo Abdo Former at Belarus (OJSC Amkodor Holding Limited Company)
  • Former President of NRNA Upendra Mahato, wife Samata Nepal and businessman (partner) Niraj Govinda Shrestha with investments at British Virgin Islands, Cyprus, Belarus, England and India (Yumi Nepal Earthquake Appeal, Nostal Business Corp and Mabel Apparel, SpartleyVentures, Pankur Finance, Tipologia, Moneystar, Amkodor, BNK, Yagyadeep)
  • Ajaya Raj Sumargi in association with Arjun Sharma at Cyprus (Airbell Services Limited)
  • Arun Kumar Chaudhary, wife Shila Chaudhary and sons Karan and Survansh, Chaudhary Group, at Gurnsey (Tenby Nominees Limited and Brock Nominees Limited )
