Cops under scanner for alleged extortion
Kathmandu, February 17:
Police are working to gather enough evidence against two police inspectors — Suresh Dhungana and Kiran Joshi — who, along with another Everest climber and two-time record holder Pemba Dorje Sherpa, allegedly extorted cash Rs 1.1 million from Mt Everest climber Mingma Chhiring Sherpa.
According to the police, a team of police personnel from the Kathmandu District Police Office, Hanumandhoka, is trying to gather facts about the alleged looting. The two inspectors were posted at the secretariat of the Inspector General of Police, Shyam Bhakta Thapa.
Spokesperson of the Nepal Police Ramesh Chand said Chhiring had lodged a complaint with the police inspectorate at the police headquarters. Police have taken Pemba Sherpa into custody and are grilling him. Mingma said Pemba, along with the two policemen, kidnapped him and demanded the amount after saying that his citizenship certificate was fake. Pemba reportedly told the police during investigation that he followed Dhungana’s orders.
