DEAN points out numerous poll code violations
Kathmandu, April 20:
Movement of many parties was restricted and their candidates and cadres were prevented from campaigning in nearly 40 per cent of the country during the constituent assembly election, Democracy and Election Alliance Nepal said today.
Releasing its preliminary report on the constituent assembly polls held on April 10, DEAN said 241 cases of poll-related violence were recorded in 51 districts with 33 people killed, 81 kidnapped and 890 injured.
The report stated that the lengthy pre-electoral period saw poor security environment in a substantial number of constituencies, adding, “Numerous incidents and irregularities were observed on the election day, ranging from ill-managed polling centres to booth capturing by cadres of the political parties.”
Despite some cases of violent activities, the report said the election was largely peaceful.
Addressing the report releasing programme, DEAN chairman Udaya Nepali Shrestha said the report was based on inputs from around 9,393 observers deployed all over the country.
“Some lapses could not be overlooked, but we did our best to bring the first-hand information from the polling centres,” he said.
He also said that the detail report with recommendations will be published after the election would be complete.
Some 60,000 observers from 148 national organisations were deployed across the country to observe the election.
