Every year, people flock the temple on the occasion of Mahashivaratri. The shrine -- of Hindu God Shiva who is also known as Mahadev -- is considered the head of India's famous Shiva shrine, Kedarnath, and it draws a large number of people on every festival dedicated to Lord Shiva.
According to the Doleshwor Mahadev Conservation and Development Committee, all four temple gates were opened since 4:00 am today for the convenience of devotees who visit the temple following an early bath.
A mixture of water, cow milk and jaggery, fruits, sweets, and Bel (wood apple) leaves are offered to the idol of Doleshwor with the belief that it would bring family peace, happiness and prosperity. As per Hindu scriptures, an unmarried paying homage to Lord Shiva will be blessed with a good spouse.
