Discrimination against LGBTIs should end: Human rights activists

KATHMANDU: Human rights activists have stressed the need to end discrimination of all kind against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI).

They underlined so at a programme organised by the Blue Diamond Society (BDS) and the UN's office in Nepal to mark the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

On the occasion, Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Kumar Khadka underscored the effective implementation of the laws and policies aimed at ending discrimination against the LGBTI.

He also spoke of the need to launch awareness drive on the issues like homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.

Mohana Ansari, a member of the National Human Rights Commission, stated that the state should ensure LGBTI's access to education.

BD's President Pinky Gurung underlined the need for equal access and opportunities for the members of the LGBTI to education, health and employment.

Moreover, the members of the BDS moved the audiences to tears with their harrowing tales of suffering they went through in lack of support from their own family members due to their different sexual orientation.
