Dispute prolongs ANNFSU convention

The 22nd national general convention of the All Nepal National Free Student Union aligned to CPN-UML is likely to prolong for few more days due to dispute over selection of convention representatives.
The three-day convention was earlier scheduled to begin from February 10 but was postponed due to the sudden demise of Nepali Congress president and former Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.
The convention began from February 11 amid dispute over selection of convention representatives in few district and regional committees.
The convention was scheduled to conclude yesterday by electing new leadership.
Currently, two panels led by party chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Madhav Kumar Nepal are contending various posts in the union.
Therefore, each panel is trying to secure maximum votes by ensuring selection of as many representatives as possible from their respective sides.
ANNFSU vice-chair Nabina Lama, who is contending for the post of vice president from the Oli panel said they would sort out the dispute over convention representatives by tonight, publish voter list and file nomination for various positions.
“There was a dispute over selection of convention representatives as some of our members are not abiding by the rules and regulations,” said Lama.
ANNFSU vice-chair Ain Mahar, who is contending for the post of general secretary from Lama’s panel said that they would file nominations for election by tonight. He said the voting process would begin tomorrow.
ANNFSU secretary Radhika Khatiwada, who is contending for the post of vice-chair Nepal panel claimed that dispute over the selection of convention representatives has ended. “The nomination process will begin tomorrow and the voting is most likely to begin on Tuesday,” she said.
The national general convention will elect a president, four vice presidents and a general secretary through open competition.
Similarly, out of seven secretaries, four secretaries will be elected through open competition, while the remaining three will be nominated.
Apart from this, chiefs of three committees, 17-member standing committee and a 141-member central committee will be elected during the convention.
