KATHMANDU, JULY 14

The US Embassy in Nepal welcomed Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu, who is visiting Nepal as part of his regular diplomatic engagement in the region.

In Kathmandu, Lu met with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to express condolences on the recent passing of his wife, Sita Dahal. He discussed Nepal's achievements on its Summit for Democracy commitments, the recent bolstering of human rights protections in Nepal, and the progress of the MCC-Compact till date with Foreign Minister N P Saud and former prime ministers KP Sharma Oli and Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The MCC Compact will commence implementation in August and within the next five years provide essential electrical infrastructure, improve capacity for road maintenance, and create thousands of jobs, according to the US Embassy.

During his regional tour, Assistant Secretary Lu also visited India and Bangladesh.

The US Embassy said high-level diplomatic engagements are a routine part of strengthening both US-Nepal and regional partnerships in furtherance of a more secure, sovereign, prosperous, and democratic world.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted that during the meeting between Donald Lu and Saud, matters related to Nepal-US relations and cooperation figured.
