Dr Govinda KC ends fast-unto-death on 22nd day

KATHMANDU: Dr Govinda KC, who had been staging a fast-unto-death for the past 21 days, has ended his strike drinking juice from the hands of a two-and-a-half-year-old Marshang Tamang, an earthquake survivor, on Sunday.

KC ended his 10th hunger strike after he signed a 12-point agreement during a meeting with the government representatives today.

According to the agreement, a high level committee would be formed under the leadership of educationist Kedar Bhakta Mathema to decide on the termination of Tribhuvan University Vice-Chancellor Tirtha Raj Khaniya.

The committee is assigned to submit a report in the next three months.

Dr KC yesterday had refused to budge from his stand even after Dr Jagadish Prasad Agrawal was appointed the Dean of the Institute of Medicine on the basis of seniority just as Dr KC had demanded.

He remained adamant about Khaniya's ouster.

He said all his demands were to establish "a system" in Nepal's medical education sector. He had begun the hunger strike on November 13.
