KATHMANDU, JULY 11

Election Commissioner Dr Janaki Kumari Tuladhar has assumed the role of Acting Chief Election Commissioner following the retirement of Ram Prasad Bhandari on July 7 upon reaching the constitutional age limit of 65.

The Election Commission, which is mandated to have five office-bearers including the Chief Election Commissioner, is currently operating with only Dr Tuladhar and Election Commissioner Sagun Shamsher JB Rana.

The Constitutional Council has recommended Man Bahadur Karki of Morang as the new Chief Election Commissioner, and Dr Rajiv Subba of Kathmandu and Guru Prasad Wagle of Okhaldhunga as Election Commissioners. However, they have yet to take office as their appointments await parliamentary hearing.

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has begun the vetting process by inviting complaints and feedback on the recommended nominees.
