KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 18
The Election Commission of Nepal (ECN) has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to implement robust security measures to ensure that the upcoming by-election is conducted in a free, fair, impartial, and fearless environment.
A meeting of the high-level election security committee, chaired by Election Commissioner Sagun Shumser JBR, issued these directives today. The by-election, scheduled for December 1, seeks to fill 42 vacant posts at the local level. According to the ECN, a total of 407 candidates filed their nominations on November 17.
Emphasizing strict adherence to security protocols, the ECN called for reliable and secure transportation arrangements for ballot boxes both before and after the election. It also urged compliance with the Election Code of Conduct during the restricted period, instructing authorities to monitor violations and take immediate action against offenders.
The Commission further directed the prohibition of alcohol sales and distribution in the electoral areas from November 20 until vote counting concludes.
Additionally, it requested smooth public transportation arrangements for voters on Election Day to uphold the fairness, transparency, and impartiality of the by-election process.
