Election Commission wants right to fix poll dates
KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has sought right to announce dates for elections.
Submitting the annual report of the fiscal year 2014/15 to President Bidya Devi Bhandari today, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav said that the provision of periodic elections could be materialised if the EC was given authority to announce the dates.
The report has also stated that suggestions provided by the EC were not incorporated in the Constitution.
The EC has also demanded the institutional autonomy for managing its staff and others.
As per the report, monitoring the activities of the EC by parliamentary committees was against the provision of constitutional body's independence while implementing the biometric voters' cards was a great achievement of the Commission.
