Environmentalists feted on World Earth Day

Minister for Local Development Khadga Bahadur GC today gave away awards and felicitated different organisations and personalities on the occasion of World Earth Day 2005. This year’s Kathmandu Environment Awards were given to Huta Ram Baidhya and the Valley Traffic Police Office. Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) presents the awards each year to an individual and an organisation. And the year’s city volunteer was Shrijana Shakya while the year’s nature club was named the Bhrikuti Nature Club of Boudha. The minister also felicitated DHL Nepal, Himalayan Bank Pvt Ltd, Save the Environment Foundation, Environment Conservation Initiative Nepal, NEPSEMAC, Clean Kathmandu Valley Team, Tol Sudhar Samiti of ward no. 19, besides traffic policeman Sitaram Hachhethu, teacher Bimala Shrestha and The Himalayan Times reporter Razen Manandhar, for their contribution in preservation of environment of the city. Minister GC said that the significance of celebrating the World Earth Day was that it raises awareness among the people on the deteriorating environment and urges us to take steps for preservation.
