KATHMANDU, AUGUST 6

The House of Representatives has listed the impeachment motion filed against former chief justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana as a tentative agenda for discussion tomorrow.

The Parliament Secretariat stated that the impeachment motion against CJ Rana, presented by lawmaker Dev Prakash Gurung on 3 March 2022, in accordance with Article 101 (2) of the constitution and Rule 161 of the House of Representatives Rules would be discussed.

Rana remains suspended since February 13, when an impeachment motion against him was registered in the Parliament. Rana's suspension has drawn criticism from the main opposition CPN-UML and some lawyers who have objected to prolonging impeachment proceedings.

Secretary at the Parliament Secretariat Gopalnath Yogi said the House would debate the issue tomorrow before sending the motion to the 11-member Impeachment Recommendation Committee of the House of Representatives.

According to Yogi, all lawmakers who want to take part in the impeachment motion debate will get chance to speak in the House of Representatives. The House will then send the motion to the Impeachment Recommendation Committee, which will prepare a report within three months.

After the panel prepares its report, it will have to send the report to the House following which the House will hold a debate on the report before putting the motion to vote.

"The Impeachment Recommendation Committee will have maximum three months to prepare its report, but if it prepares its report before the three months deadline, it can submit the report to the House," Yogi added.

UML lawmakers Bishnu Prasad Poudel, Krishna Bhakta Pokharel, Lalbabu Pandit, and Shivamaya Tumbahangphe are members of the 11-member Impeachment Recommendation Committee.

Other members of the committee are Rekha Sharma and Yashoda Gurung Subedi from NCP-Maoist Centre, and Min Bahadur Bishwakarma and Ram Bahadur Bista from the NC. Similarly, Pramod Sah of Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal, Ekbal Miya from Democratic Socialist Party-Nepal and Kalyani Kumari Khadka from CPN (Unified Socialist) are also members of the committee.

Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota had formed the panel to look into the impeachment motion on March 6.
