Ex-IGPs Rana and Gurung surrender to SC over Sudan scam

KATHMANDU: Two former Inspectors General of Police – Om Bikram Rana and Hem Bahadur Gurung – have surrendered to the Supreme Court on Thursday.

Similarly, former DIG Deepak Kumar Shrestha and the then AIG Deepak Singh Thangen have also surrendered and were sent to jail by the Court.

The  former Nepal Police top guns, along with other senior officials, were convicted in multimillion dollar Sudan scam and slapped jail sentence along with penalty, on April 30.

They were found guilty in embezzling funds and sending substandard logistics to Sudan for the Nepal Police personnel deployed for the United Nations peacekeeping mission.

Both Rana and Gurung have been sent to jail. However, they can file an appeal against the conviction verdict.

Earlier in February 2012, the Special Court had convicted them of corruption along with the Armed Personnel Carrier suppliers.
