Ex-NDA Valley in-charge’s arrest : Kailash was working to foil polls: Police

Kathmandu, February 20:

Police today revealed that Kailash Bahadur Singh, who was arrested yesterday, was not only involved in many serious crimes, including murders and extortions, but was also working closely with royalists to foil the Constituent Assembly election.

Earlier yesterday, Singh identified himself as the former Valley in-charge of the National Defence Army and claimed he was behind the Bhotahiti blast on January 14 after police had arrested him.

SP Sarbendra Khanal at the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, said that Singh had recently formed a fighting group named Rastriya Bibhuti Sena comprising 1,000 cadres and was planning to meet royalists at Hotel Shenshah, Dhapasi, to discuss how to foil the Constituent Assembly polls.

Former Nepal Army personnel Singh is learnt to have quit the army as he was abducted by the Maoists in 2002. As he was duped by his friend Suman Sharma in 2003, Singh started to work with little known gangsters in the capital, the police said.

“He also worked with Tarai Janatantrik Morcha and National Defence Army for a short time and recently was working with royalists,” Khanal said.

According to the police, Kailash admitted that he was involved in the killings of Shankar Adhikari at Galfu Chaur in Tribhuwan International Airport on June 4, 2007, and Surbir Shrestha, the owner of Ajema Fashion in Lazimpat, on June 24, 2007. “He also admitted to have murdered Meryrose Shrestha on July 6, 2007, before making away with valuables,” Khanal claimed.

Police had seized an Italian pistol, a revolver and 13 rounds of unused bullets from him. The police also seized two kgs of gunpowder, two kgs of iron balls meant to make bomb and documents related to Rastriya Bibhuti Sena.

Singh, who hails from Darchual district, had opened fire at police when a team of the police from the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, tried to arrest him at Dillibazaar yesterday evening. The police said that Singh claimed to have widened his party’s network at Rolpa, Rukum, Dang, Banke, Bardiya and Kailali districts.
