Fake Indian currencies of Rs 10 mln face value seized
KATHMANDU: Police said they recently seized a cache of fake Indian currencies with the face value of Rs 10 million from assorted locations of Kathmandu.
Six persons including a Pakistani national were arrested by a joint team of Nepal Police Headquarters Special Bureau and Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu for operating a fake currency racket.
The suspects have been identified as Mahammad Nadim from Karachi of Pakistan, Uma Devi Pandey (55) from Harnamadi of Makawanpur district, Mahadev Timilsina (56) from Simar-5 of Bara district, Dil Bahadur Thapa (40) from Maisthan-8 of Mahottari district, Paramananda Yadav (58) of Bhauratar-7 of Parsa district and Ishwar Prasad Sah Teli from Ganj Bhawanpipur of Bara district.
Nadim, Timilsina, Pandey and Thapa were nabbed on Monday while Yadav and Teli on Wednesday.
Police confiscated the fake cash of Rs 5 million face value from Nadim at Thamel and of the same amount from Timilsina at Baneshwor.
Pandey was also nabbed from Baneshwor and Thapa, Yadav and Teli from Balkhu.
Nadim would bring fake banknotes from Doha and Karachi to Kathmandu, according to preliminary police investigations. Pandey would receive those notes from Nadim in order to hand them over to Timilsina. Then, Thapa would supply the currencies to India while Yadav and Teli were responsible to circulate the contraband in the Nepali market.
Police suspected that some other Nepalis, Indians and Pakistanis might have involved in the racket and they are probing into the case.
