FSU poll row sees no wayout

KATHMANDU: A meeting held between Tribhuvan University and Saraswati Campus authorities to sort out the problem of the pending vote counting of Free Students’ Union poll ended inconclusively today.

The meeting held with TU Rector was attended by Saraswati Campus chief and the FSU poll commissioner of the campus.

“We discussed the problem but could not reach a solution,” said Krishna Paudel, chief of the election committee at the campus.

“I tendered my resignation but the Rector’s Office promised us cooperation, rejecting it,” he added. “An unidentified person threatened me on the phone today.”

Following a dispute over counting code of conduct, students of the Thamel-based campus had locked all the 11 election commissioners, booth agents, campus chief and student union representatives at the campus office till 10 pm yesterday.

The Free Students’ Union poll scheduled for March 19 was deferred till April 12 after a dispute among student unions. Counting of the postponed election is yet to begin.

“We want to resolve the problem as soon as possible,” Paudel said. “We expect a wayout tomorrow.”

A meeting held among campus administration, the poll committee and the student unions could not reach an agreement on counting the votes yesterday.

Two student unions, accusing forgery in the election, opposed the mixing of the ballots.
