Gachhadar's MJF-D abandons four-party bloc

KATHMANDU: Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Democratic, led by former Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, on Friday announced that  it was pulling out of the four-party alliance that had struck breakthrough agreements on the constitution drafting.

The alliance that included ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML and opposition parties UCPN-Maoist and MJF-D had struck a 16-point agreement, on June 8, to expedite the constitution drafting process, and another deal on the number of federal units and their tentative boundaries on August 9.

Party General Secretary Ram Janam Chaudhary told our correspondent Ram Kumar Kamat that the party decided to abandon the alliance as the three parties did not show any readiness to incorporate demands of Madhesi and Tharu people in the constitution.

"Now, we are no more in the four-party allaince," Chaudhary said, "The three parties could not agree to address points of disagreements raised by Tharus and Madhesis in the draft constitution."

At the time the major parties were mulling revision of the deal on number of purported provinces and their boundaries, uncertainty looms large over their decision after the the MJF-D quit the bloc.

Meanwhile, the MJF-D is set to organise a press conference at the parliamentary party office in Singhadurbar to explain its recent decision.

The press conference will be held at around 4:30 pm today.
