Garbage disposal disrupted

KATHMANDU: After two days of the agreement, garbage disposal was once again disrupted on Thursday after a local group from Okharpauwa blocked the way to Sisdole landfill site.

Dr Sumitra Amatya, general manager of Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre (SWMRC) under the Ministry of Local Development said garbage disposal was affected after locals of Okharpauwa obstructed the way to the landfill site. The group has forwarded a 40-point demand, including budget for construction of a road and maintenance of the irrigation canal.

Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of the environment section of KMC, said the problem re-emerged after the locals once again blocked garbage vehicles from entering the landfill site demanding implementation of past agreement. “We are holding talks with the struggle committee. We are likely to reach an agreement soon,” said Shrestha. Another group of Okharpauwa locals had agreed not to disrupt garbage disposal two days ago.
