Glacier monitoring training
KATHMANDU: The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), UNESCO, Nepal National IHP Committee, HKH-Friend Group on Snows and Glaciers and International Association of Cryospheric Sciences concluded their joint 17-day training on glaciers at Yala glacier in Langtang, Rasuwa, on May 15.
The training saw 18 participants from Nepal, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakstan, Kyrgyztan and Pakistan.
Issuing a press statement today, ICIMOD said the training aimed at helping participants make measurements and calculate the total mass of a glacier.
"The mass balance of a glacier is the net result of the amount of snow added in a season. This is the universally accepted method for monitoring changes in the volume of a glacier," read the statement.
Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Ganesh Sah distributed certificates to the participants at the closing ceremony.
