Govt, Dr KC’s reps talk, make no headway

Kathmandu, July 31

Talks between the government and Dr Govinda KC’s representatives held today ended inconclusively.

“Today’s discussion centred around the topic of autonomy of Maharajgunj Medical campus and other demands that were listed in the beginning,” said Dr Suman Acharya, who participated in the talks.

Informing about the discussion he said, as per the request of government representatives, Dr Jagadish Prasad Agrawal, Dean of Institute of Medicine spoke on details of autonomy for the medical campus and the rights of institutions. “Which rights should be given to the IoM was discussed.”

He said, “Government representatives will prepare a draft on ‘autonomy’ as well as other provisions. Through discussions, we will accept the right decisions that will benefit all the medical students.” The discussion will continue tomorrow as well. It is not possible to give a decision on autonomy of the IoM without discussion among political leaders, the Cabinet and other personalities, so it will take some time, he said. This is the fourth round of talks and a resolution still appears elusive. It is also the eighth day of Dr Govinda KC’s on Fast unto death. His condition is worsening by the day.
