Govt departments told to ensure right to information

KATHMANDU: The National Information Commission (NIC) has urged the governmental departments to ensure people's right to information.

Inviting directors general of all the departments along with their senior officials on Wednesday, the NIC urged them to respect right to information, ensure citizens' access to information and publish information about their offices' activities in every three months.

NIC Chairman Krishna Hari Banskota in his 20-point paper also urged the government officials to train their staff on right to information and depute information officers.

Banskota said the departments should make public information sought by the citizens within 15 days and protect identity of the applicants.

He also told them to implement directives of the NIC and not to make citizens pay for information as far as possible.

Information Commissioner duo Kiran Pokharel and Yasoda Timsina and Secretary Sharad Raj Bista had also addressed the function, according to the NIC Spokesperson Bed Nidhi Adhikari.
