Hearing on in Veep oath row

Kathmandu, March 2:

Defending Vice-President Parmananda Jha in the case of

swearing-in row in the Supreme Court, Deputy Attorney General

Kumar Chundal claimed that the constitution allowed taking oath in any language.

Pleading before a division bench of Justices Min Bahadur Rayamajhi and Bala Ram KC, Chundal argued that since the Vice-President took the oath in Hindi and signed the text written in Nepali, there was no need to raise a hue and cry.

Justice Rayamajhi cited US President Barrack Obama taking oath for the second time due to different pronunciation of a

single word ‘faithfully’.

Chundal, however, argued that the US had adopted one language (English) so it would not be possible to take oath in any language other than English. But Nepalis have several mother languages so the Constitutional Assembly members can take oath in their mother languages, he claimed.
