High-handedness protested

Kathmandu, January 21:

The government’s forceful measures to control demonstration led by Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum in the capital is violation of the rights to express peacefully and put the demands, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said.

Issuing a statement today, the NHRC urged the government to ensure people’s rights to peaceful demonstration.

In a separate press release, Human Rights Organisation of Nepal (HURON) urged the government and the protesting parties Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum and Janatantric Terai Mukti Morcha to find political solution to the ongoing problem.

Meanwhile, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party said the peace process is moving ahead to conduct Constituent Assembly elections and that the ongoing protests would support regressive factors to obstruct the scheduled election. The party also sought action to penalise the guilty and compensate the victims of the Lahan incident.

Also today, the Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) appealed the government and the eight political parties to set up a probe committee to investigate on the death of a student in a clash between the MJF activists and the Maoists in Lahan.

HURPES has also appealed the protesting parties not to vandalise public and private property and put their demands peacefully.
