HLEC seeks four-month term extension

Kathmandu, February 1

Expressing disagreement with Education Minister Gopal Man Shrestha’s proposal to extend the tenure of High Level Education Commission by 15 days, the commission today decided to seek extension of its term by four months.

The term of the commission formed on September 7, 2017, expires today.

Commission members from the left parties did not accept the minister’s proposal. They said extending the commission’s tenure by a few days would not be adequate as there was still a lot of homework to be done to finalise its draft report on government’s policy towards private schools.

“In addition, province-level discussion in a must to widen acceptance of the report,” said committee member Ranju Kumari Jha. “Discussion on the report in the provinces would enrich the report,” she added. Commission members representing private schools said the initial report was aimed at curbing the growth of private schools.
