House’s attention drawn towards uncontrolled taxes

Kathmandu, August 13

Lawmakers today drew the attention of the House of the Representative to the uncontrolled tax imposed on people by local levels.

Citing the case of Rs 2,000 tax imposed on an astrologer for practising astrology, lawmaker Hridayesh Tripathi said local levels had started imposing tax on everything — from a poultry animal to bicycle. He said such activities of local levels might pose a threat to federalism. He asked the government to address this problem as soon as possible and give people relief from the burden of increased taxes.

Lawmaker Mahendra Narayan Yadav also requested the government to introduce scientific ways of collecting taxes.

Lawmaker Dila Sangraula Panta said three tiers of governments are collecting taxes in their own way. “Some local levels have even increased the charges for  birth registration and death registration,” she added.
