Human trafficking act in the offing

Kathmandu, February 12:

The government is drafting regulation of Trafficking in Humans Act with an emphasis on rehabilitation and reintegration of survivors of trafficking.

The government is planning to depute non-government organisations on rehabilitation and reintegration of survivors of trafficking and vulnerable groups by financially supporting them to run the shelters.

In this connection, the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare today met 50 non-governmental organisations working with women.

The ministry’s annual programme for the current year includes rehabilitation and reintegration for survivors, vulnerable groups in coordination with NGOs in Sindhupalchowk, Kathmandu and Kailali.

The Act has taken due consideration of the issues, including trafficking victim’s dignity, privacy, care and support and has comprehensive, effective and human rights-sensitive provisions.

The Act has also incorporated the concept of rehabilitation of the victims, establishing rehabilitation centres and reintegrating them with their families

and society.

The Act has defined as criminal offenses the acts of trafficking, including transporting, transferring and harbouring of a human being for the purpose of organ transplantation, slavery, and bonded labour.
