Sherpa’s bid

KATHMANDU: Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, 19, both a singer and a climber, is all set to release his music album Sherpini Kanchhi atop the Mt Everest. If he succeeds, he will be the first ever singer and composer musician to release an album on the summit of Mt Everest. He is beginning his journey to the top of the world in April. Buddhi Raj Bajracharya, minister without a portfolio, at a press meet here on Friday, handed Nepal’s flag to Sherpa for placing it on the summit.— HNS

Xavier school opened

KATHMANDU: District Education Officer of Kathmandu, Laxman Khanal, inaugurated Xavier International School (XIS), an English-medium co-educational day school, at Kalopul on Thursday. A junior wing of the Xavier International College with 20:1 student teacher ratio, the XIS runs classes for students from nursery to Grade VII. Speaking at the inaugural function, Prerana Panday, vice-principal of the XIS, said, “With the motto of ‘Education to Serve Humanity’ the mission of XIS is to inspire students to achieve academic excellence. Quality education is essential to compete at the international level,” said Mahesh Agrawal, advisory board member of the XIS.— HNS

Release cop: NHRC

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday urged the Maoists to immediately and unconditionally release Police Constable Meghnath Ghimire and Shyam Krishna Khatiwoda of Hetauda-9, whom they had abducted on Wednesday. The NHRC also urged the Maoists to deal the hostages under the international humanitarian laws. The NHRC also informed that it has dispatched an team to Thokarpa of Sindhupalchok to probe the recent action by RNA and the Maoists. — HNS

KIRTIPUR: Kirtipur Municipality has formed a seven-member committee with the objective of systematising the government schools located in the municipality. While Badri Khanal is secretariat member of the committee, Pradeep Maharjan, principal of the Megal Higher Secondary School, and Shree Kumar Rayamajhi, principal of Balkumari Secondary School, are among the members of the committee headed by Kirtipur mayor Dhruba Maharjan. — RSS
