NWPP holds rally
KATHMANDU: Nepal Workers and Peasants’ Party (NWPP), a partner in the seven-party alliance, on Monday held a rally in Bhaktapur to mark its 32nd founding day. The rally, which went through major parts of Bhaktapur municipality, later converged into a mass meeting, according to the party. Addressing the mass meeting, central committee members of the party urged the people to “boycott” the upcoming municipal polls. — HNS
NUTA veep arrested
KATHMANDU: Vice-president of the Nepal University Teachers’ Association (NUTA), Shiv Chandra Upadhyay, was arrested from a rally at New Road in Kathmandu on Monday, according to Rameshwor Updhyay, general secretary of the NUTA. “NUTA demands immediate release of all the detainees including Updhyay at the earliest,” he said. —HNS
Property gutted
KATHMANDU: A house owned by Sanas Kaji Shakya caught fire on Sunday night damaging property worth Rs 150,000 at Sainbu-6 , Lalitpur. Police said the fire broke out in the house after an electric meter box caught fire at 12:45 am. In Kuleshwor, fire broke out in a room rented by Bishnu Acharya on Sunday, damaging property worth Rs 12,000. — HNS
NSP takes action
KATHMANDU: Nepal Samata Party (NSP) on Monday expelled Dhanusha president of the party, Arjun Lama. The action has been taken following a statement issued by him, which went against the interest of the party. Narayan Singh Pun, Minister for Land Reforms and Management, chaired the meeting. — HNS
Nationalists’ stance
KATHMANDU: The Meeting Centre for Nationalists, Nepal on Monday denied reports that claimed that it was ready to join the front led by Rajeswore Devkota. The statement issued said that since the party has its own ideology, no one should be confused on the issue. — HNS
Praja Parishad chief ill
KATHMANDU: President of the Nepal Praja Parishad, Ramhari Sharma, has taken ill from high blood pressure. Sharma, 90, is on a bed-rest at his residence. He will not participate in any programmes on the martyr’s day. Sharma, the founder of the Nepal Praja Parishad, is called a living martyr of Nepal. — RSS
