CJ leaves for China
KATHMANDU: The Chief Justice, Dilip Kumar Paudel, left the Capital on Saturday to take part in the 22nd Biennial Congress on the Law of the World, which will begin in Beijing and Shanghai on Sunday. Chief justices from 40 countries will take part in the conference, which will conclude on September 10. Meanwhile, the King has assigned the seniormost justice of the Supreme Court, Kedar Prasad Giri, as the acting CJ in the absence of the Chief Justice, the Press Secretariat of the King stated. — RSS
Thai team in town
KATHMANDU: A 26-member Thai delegation arrived in Kathmandu on Saturday for a three-day visit. The visit is a part of Getting to Know New BIMSTEC Members, a programme launched by the government of Thailand. The first BIMSTEC Summit, held last year in Bangkok, had stressed the need to coordinate between diverse strengths in tourism sector to derive benefits from natural, cultural and historical attractions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. — RSS
King expresses sorrow
KATHMANDU: King Gyanendra on Saturday expressed sorrow over the heavy loss of lives and massive devastation caused in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama of the US by hurricane Katrina. In a message sent to George W Bush, the US president, King Gyanendra said, in this hour of grief and anguish, the King, on behalf of the government and people of Nepal, and on his own behalf, would like to extend deepest condolences and sympathies to the president and the government and the people of the USA. — RSS
NBL staff to join duty
KATHMANDU: The employees of the Nepal Bank Limited (NBL) have agreed to resume their work from Sunday following an understanding between the NBL management and the employees on Saturday evening. The week-long strike was broken after the management agreed to fulfil their demands. The NBL employees were on a strike with 55-point demands, one among them was ensuring their right to freely carry out union activities in the NBL, the largest and oldest bank of the country. All the 106 branches of the bank were closed across the country since the last one week. — HNS
