Troops Sudan-bound
KATHMANDU: An infantry company of the Royal Nepal Army left for Sudan on Friday to work as peace-keeping troops, Army’s Public Relations Directorate said. Although UN had demanded more troops for Sudan, only a company strength has been sent, it was informed. — HNS
Ghimire bags award
KATHMANDU: Kartikiya Ghimire has been selected for this year’s Peace Media Child Journalism Award for his active participation in child journalism. He is the editor of an on-line paper for children and chairman of the Media Professionals’ Group for Children. Likewise, Peace Media Youth Award has been given to Tanneri Samaj Nepal while Peace Media Organisation Award has been given to Sathhi Organisation, Kavre. — RSS
Meet on conflict-hit
KATHMANDU: International Press Institute Nepal (IPI-Nepal) national committee organised a workshop here on Friday with an objective to build a network of the conflict affected journalists. Inaugurating the workshop, chairman of the Nepal Press Institute, Gokul Pokharel said journalism has been badly affected by the conflict and observed that forging solidarity among journalists will be the best way to minimise the negative impact of the conflict on journalism. Ramkrishna Regmi pointed out on the need for assisting the conflict-affected journalists. — RSS
Home for elderly
BHAKTAPUR: A home for helpless senior citizens has been built at Bhaktapur municipality-7, at a total cost of Rs 11.7 million. The three-storied building has a capacity to provide shelter to 40 elders, according to member-secretary of the building construction committee Janani Prasad Mul. — RSS
Discussion on Derrida
KATHMANDU: The philosophy of French philosopher Jacques Derrida on literature, art, sociology and other disciplines was discussed at an interaction here on Thursday. The iconoclastic postulations of scholar Derrida had dismantled the long-existing western intellectual preoccupations and tradition. At the interaction held by the Royal Nepal Academy’s International Academic Relations Development Sub-committee, Dr Sanjiv Upreti and Bishnu Sapkota presented working papers about Derrida. — RSS
Nepal chairs meeting
KATHMANDU: The standing committee of the CPN-UML was held under the chairmanship of general secretary, Madhav Kumar Nepal, at the central office of the party. The meeting has called for public participation in the protest programme called by the political parties for restoration of peace and democracy. — RSS
Bid to save water
Kathmandu: Different programmes are being organised to celebrate the Sithinakha, a festival of Newar community, as the Nepal Water Conservation Day. Sithinakha is the day in which the Newars of the Kathamndu Valley worship the traditional sources of water like stone spouts and wells as “life-giving forces” and clean them, using the indigenous technologies. The day falls on June 13 this year. — HNS
Pandey chairs meet
KATHMANDU: Minister for foreign affairs Ramesh Nath Pandey chaired the second meeting of the high level committee to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Nepal’s joining in the United Nations organisation, at the ministry of foreign affairs on Friday. Pandey highlighted the significance of carrying out commemorative activities and programmes to mark the occasion in a substantive and meaningful manner. — rss
