Increase in local units gerrymandering: UML
KATHMANDU: The main opposition CNP-UML has accused the government of gerrymandering, issuing a press release on Tuesday, with three weeks left for the second round of local level polls.
The government has increased the number of local level units in 22 districts of Terai yesterday with the aim of taking Madhes-centric political parties on board the second round of local level elections, which are going to be held in 41 districts of Province 1, 2, 5 and 7 on June 14.
However, UML, which has so far won the highest number of seats in the local bodies in the first phase of local polls- the counting of votes is still on, stated that the government decision is in contravention of the Constitution, adding that the changes in local units have adversely affected the preparations for the second phase of polls.
Meanwhile, the party has also urged the ruling parties to withdraw the impeachment motion filed against Chief Justice Sushila Karki, adding it was registered with ill intention to meddle with the independent judiciary and to make her, who was working dutifully, go on retirement with the case pending at the House.
The party has also demanded the ruling coalition to withdraw the constitution amendment bill tabled at the Legislature-Parliament.
The government decision to grant amnesty to those involved in Tikapur incident is also against the law, added the party, reminding the government that UML had already urged to go back the decision.
