India re-expresses concerns over Tarai unrest, urges consensus

KATHMANDU: India, once again, has urged major political forces in Nepal to reach a consensus on political challenges including ongoing protests in the Tarai region.

Issuing a press statement on Monday evening, a day after promulgation of the new Constitution, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said it was “concerned over the incidents of violence resulting in death and injury in regions of Nepal bordering India following the promulgation of Constitution yesterday.”

Earlier yesterday, India had expressed similar concerns while extending best wishes to Nepali people, but refraining from welcoming the historic document.

Today also, it said, “We had repeatedly cautioned the political leadership of Nepal to take urgent steps to defuse the tension in these regions. This, if done in a timely manner, could have avoided these serious developments.”

“The issues facing Nepal are political in nature and cannot be resolved through force,” the statement added, “We still hope that initiatives will be taken by Nepal’s leadership to effectively and credibly address the causes underlying the present state of confrontation.”
