Interim order against banknote defacement

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court on Sunday issued an interim order in the name of Nepal Rastra Bank, Ministry of Finance, and the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers telling them to prohibit stitching and tearing of banknotes, and writing on them.

The interim order was issued by a single bench of Justice Cholendra Shamsher JB Rana.

Advocates Anant Raj Luitel, Manoj Kumar Khadka, Prabindra Raj Joshi, Rudra Pathak and Padam Shrestha had jointly filed a writ petition on Friday demanding prohibition on stitching and tearing of and writing on banknotes.

The writ petitioner said even the banks were found stitching banknotes and if this was not prevented, it could put additional financial burden on the tax payers.
