Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have provided nearly 9.3 tonnes of emergency relief supplies to communities affected by the devastating floods and landslides that struck Rasuwa, Nuwakot and surrounding areas on August 26.
The relief goods, including blankets, plastic sheets, sleeping pads, tents and portable jerry cans, arrived in Nepal on Wednesday and were handed over at the Humanitarian Staging Area of Tribhuvan International Airport.
Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Maeda Toru handed over the assistance to Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun at a ceremony attended by representatives of both governments and JICA Nepal. During the event, JICA Nepal Chief Representative Matsuzaki Mizuki and Minister Pun exchanged a Letter of Delivery and Acceptance.
Pun thanked Japan and JICA for providing immediate assistance following the disaster. JICA Nepal said it expected the Nepal government to coordinate with stakeholders to ensure timely and proper distribution of the relief goods.
The assistance follows Japan–Nepal high-level telephone talks held on August 31 and September 1, during which Japan expressed condolences to flood victims and pledged solidarity with Nepal. The Japanese government said it hoped the emergency supplies would help ease hardships and contribute to recovery and reconstruction, allowing victims to return to normal lives as soon as possible.
