Japan offers Rs 6.96 m for construction of safe home
KATHMANDU: The Government of Japan today decided to extend a financial assistance of $89,907, equivalent to Rs 6,964,000, to Shakti Samuha, an organisation of women with hands-on-experience on trafficking and domestic violence issues, for the implementation of a rehabilitation project for the victims of trafficking in Gokarna.
A grant contract to this effect was signed and exchanged today between Japanese Ambassador Tatsuo Mizuno and president of Shakti Samuha Chari Maya Tamang.
The amount will be used in constructing "Safe Home" for the rehabilitation of the Victims of Trafficking in Gokarna, Embassy of Japan said.
Issuing a press statement in the capital , it said, "The grant will be utilised for the construction of a three-storey,10-room building called 'Safe Home' for children and women victimised by trafficking.
"The home will provide a solid base for rehabilitating survivors of trafficking, and provide care and assistance to enable them to become economically independent," the Embassy stated.
Shakti Samuha is run by 43 women who have gained hands-on-experience on trafficking and domestic violence issues. They have been delivering emergency help, food, health, transportation and lodging, and extending training to trafficked women since 1996.
"The grant will contribute, through Shakti Samuha's activities, to improve the seriousness of human trafficking problems," the statement quoted Ambassador Mizuno as saying.
