KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 8
The Government of Japan has agreed to provide a grant of 2.853 billion yen, equivalent to Rs 2.767 billion, to Nepal for the improvement of air traffic control facilities at Tribhuvan International Airport.
Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Maeda Toru and Finance Secretary Ghanshyam Upadhyaya signed the Exchange of Notes for the grant in Kathmandu on Thursday.
Under the project, Japan will support the rehabilitation of the airport's control tower and the renewal of critical building systems, including power and UPS, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, fire protection and security systems.
The grant will also support the modernisation of communication, navigation and surveillance systems and air traffic management facilities in line with International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
According to the Embassy of Japan, the project will also strengthen operation and maintenance capacity through training.
The project is expected to improve aviation safety and continuity of airport services, enhance efficiency in air traffic management and strengthen the airport's resilience to disasters. These improvements are expected to support tourism, trade and connectivity, the embassy said.
The embassy said the project builds on Japan's longstanding cooperation with Nepal in aviation safety and human resource development.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Nepal.
