Participants at a two-day workshop on ‘Care and Support to Female Survivors of Violence’ said coordinated efforts are needed to combat violence against women. The workshop recommended the formation of a social welfare department in hospitals, strengthening the role of NGOs and coordination among government and NGOs for the rehabilitation of violence survivors. Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, Durga Shrestha, the government is planning to introduce a Women Trafficking Ordinance, which will address various issues of violence against women. “Collaborative efforts would help abolish domestic violence against women and trafficking. There is a need to establish rehabilitation centres for survivors of violence as it is often difficult to trace their families,” said Dr Sudha Sharma of Doctors of the World. Durga Ghimire, president of ABC Nepal, said, “We are only focussed on women trafficking to India but there are other countries, too, where Nepali women are being trafficked.”
