Khanal warns against missing statute deadline

KATHMANDU: Chairman of the ruling CPN-UML Jhala Nath Khanal today warned that the country could meet with an “unexpected political accident” if the major parties failed to forge a unity so as to adopt the new constitution within the next seven months.

According to the Interim Constitution, the Constituent Assembly (CA) has to adopt the new constitution before May 28, 2010.

“We will lose the thread of political stability if the CA fails to write the new constitution on time,” the UML boss said at an interaction organised by the Reporters’ Club.

He called on all the parties to forge a unity to fight the alleged idea of dissolving the CA and forming a high-level commission to draft the new constitution. “Such ideas have been floated by the elements which do not want to see a progressive constitution,” he fumed.

He also accused major parties of being deviated from their declared mission and influenced by reactionary elements, instead of forging a unity for the timely promulgation of the constitution. He warned that polarisation among major political forces would only invite “confrontation” and “bloodshed” in the country.

“During my recent visits to India and China, I found that top leaders of both the neighbours want political stability in Nepal established through the new constitution,” Khanal said.

“Though the UCPN-Maoist is yet to get rid of its mindset of ‘anarchism and Leftist extremism’, there is no other option to finding an understanding and consensus before it in order to end the peace process logically,” he said.
