KMC begins emergency dumping of garbage
KATHMANDU: As a last resort, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) today began dumping the garbage at Teku Transfer Station after the locals of Aletar Landfill Site obstructed the dumping at the destined dumping site.
“We have started an emergency dumping at Teku Transfer Station after collecting garbage from major locations in the city,” Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of the Environment Management Department at the KMC, said.
He, however, said that the garbage would outrun the dumping capacity of Teku Transfer Station by Saturday.
Shrestha also sounded hopeful that the talks slated for tomorrow with the
agitating locals would pave the way for onward transportation of garbage from
the temporary site in Teku to Aletar Landfill site.
Collection of garbage, which was stalled since December 20, resumed Monday but the locals of Okharpauwa obstructed the disposal at Aletar Landfill Site in Nuwakot district.
According to an estimate by KMC, some 3,500 metric tonnes of garbage was dumped in the streets of Kathmandu during the last 10 days of strike.
Shrestha, meanwhile, said, “We collected the garbage from Jamal area yesterday and transferred to Teku station. We also collected the garbage from New Road and Bagbazaar areas today as well since it was becoming a big nuisance for the people and the traffic system.”
Shrestha said they would clear up garbage heaps accumulated since several days at Maiti Devi, Dilli Bazaar and Narayan Chaur areas by tomorrow.
