Kathmandu, July 21:

The Enforcement Department of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has collected Rs 1.513 million up to mid-July by fining owners who had parked two-wheelers on either side of roads and pavements, the department said. The KMC had, in mid-March, decided to impose a hefty fine on those who park two-wheelers on roadside and pavements to make vehicular traffic and footpath journey smoother and less risky. Motorcycle owners breaking the rule are fined Rs 1,000 and cyclists, Rs 100-200. “People are ready to pay fines than to abandon their two-wheelers and therefore we charge heavy fines to discourage them to park their vehicles on footpaths and on roads,” said City Inspector Dhanapati Sapkota, chief of the Enforcement Department. Our mobile inspection team takes away ten motorcycles everyday from the streets, he said. Motorcycle owners, however, say the authority concerned has not provided parking lots at the major administrative and commercial areas.
