koirala-ban meet : GPK for UNMIN’s credible role

Kathmandu, November 1:

Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala today urged United Nations’ secretary- general Ban Ki-moon to make sure that the world body’s mission in Nepal plays an effective and credible role in monitoring arms.

Koirala said this during a 20-minute meeting with Ki-moon here. The two discussed Nepal’s ongoing peace process.

Drawing the United Nations secretary-general’s

attention to the violation of security codes by Maoist leaders, he said the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) should fulfil

its mandate and maintain credibility while carrying out its duties.

The UNMIN should rectify its mistakes and its credibility will remain intact if it

fulfils its mandate, Nepali Congress leader Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, who was also present during the meeting, quoted Koirala.

According to Mahat, “The Nepali Congress president told Ki-moon that he was in favour of defining the jurisdiction of the special committee formed for the army integration on the basis of political consensus.”

“The UN chief expressed hope that parties would be able to move the peace process ahead by resolving their differences,” Mahat added.
