KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 27

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has installed smart streetlights on the median strip of Koteshwor-Suryabinayak road section. Altogether 450 smart lamps that consume less electricity but provide more light were installed on the power poles in that road section.

Kulman Ghising, managing director of the authority, said that smart streetlights have been installed to make road travel safe at night and to enhance urban beauty.

"Pedestrians and motorists have benefited with the installation of street lights. Also the road section has become safer and urban beauty has been enhanced."

The smart light can be controlled automatically from the feeder panel in the authority's system. Thirteen feeder panels have been installed for the Koteshwar-Suryabinayak road section.

A separate transformer has also been installed just for street lighting. Arrangements have been made for Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Madhyapur Thimi and Bhaktapur municipalities to pay electricity bills in their areas to NEA.

Apart from the billing of electricity tariff, whether the lights are working or not can be monitored from software. As part of 'Ujalyo Sahar' (bright city) campaign, the NEA has been installing smart streetlights on the main roads, historical sites listed in the World Heritage List and popular tourist destinations in coordination and partnership with the municipalities.

Smart lights are being installed with an investment ratio of 60 per cent by municipalities and 40 per cent by NEA.
