KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula on Wednesday formally announced his candidacy for the party’s presidential election during the 13th national general convention beginning tomorrow.
Popular youth leader of the party Gagan Kumar Thapa will contest for the post of general secretary from Sitaula’s panel.
Likewise, leader Umakanta Chaudhary will run for the treasurer’s post.
Organising a press conference in Battisputali of Kathmandu today, Sitaula and the team announced the candidacy.
Earlier, the party’s central leader and daughter of former party President Girija Prasad Koirala, Sujata Koirala had announced candidacy for the party’s top post.
A faithful member of the party’s establishment faction for years, Sitaula now will contest against the establishment faction’s “official” candidate Ram Chandra Paudel and the rival faction’s leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, besides Sujata.
Likewise, Thapa will lock horns with party founder BP Koirala’s son Shashanka (from the Paudel panel) and his own father-in-law Arjun Narsingh KC (from the Deuba panel).
It has been learned that Paudel will announce the candidacy today itself while Deuba will announce his team on Thursday, the opening day of the convention.
