KATHMANDU: Kwangwoon university students from South Korea visited Shree Azad Secondary School (14th Human School) in the Panchkhal Municipality, Kavre, Nepal and did various volunteer activities such as Taekwondo and IT education, Korean culture exchange from July 22 to 26.

According to Um Hong Gil Human Foundation, 20 students from Kwangwoon University's International Volunteer team were engaged in various volunteer activities and interact with students at the 14th Human School, Kavre in the presence of great mountaineer and philanthropist Captain Um Hong Gil.

Shree Azad Secondary School is a community school established in 1951. Currently School is the home for more than 940 students from kindergarten to high school and majority of the students are form Danuwar community, one of the most marginalised indigenous tribe of Nepal.

This school was hugely affected by the devastating earthquake of Nepal in 2015. At least 17 of the 26 classrooms were damaged, and while students were continuing their studies in hazardous and temporary buildings, with the recommendation of then District Education Office of Kavre, Um Hong Gil Human Foundation supported the school with new RCC School building with sufficient child-friendly furniture and gender-friendly wash facility.

The Kwangwoon University's international Volunteer team, consisting of 20 students, arrived here and divided into four teams to provide education on Korean language and Korean culture, Taekwondo, IT education, and Health and Hygiene education, according to UHGHF.

They also painted trees to control pests, cleaned up the school after the classes with the Nepali students to improve the learning environment.

On the 25th July, they had a traditional Korean fun playing games with around 500 students by holding a sports competition and a flea market.

"With the activities of the Kwangwoon University Global Volunteer teamand Um Hong Gil Human Foundation, our students are having a fun and beneficial experience to become a global citizen," said Pralhad Timilsina, the principal of the School. "We hope that various programs will continue to be carried out through continuous exchanges in the future as well."

Um Hong Gil, the Executive Director of Um Hong Gil Human Foundation said, "It is a valuable opportunity for the 14th Human School students to interact with the senior students from Korea and broaden their horizons."

UHGHF is a charity organisation working in the education sector of remote parts of Nepal since 2009. It supports community schools with its infrastructural development to ensure them with quality education. The veteran alpinist and philanthropist Captain Um Hong Gil is the founder of UHGHF.
