LALITPUR, OCTOBER 11
A community-based pilot programme in Lalitpur has sought to improve people's understanding of artificial intelligence and promote its responsible use, with organisers highlighting the need to make emerging technologies more accessible and inclusive.
The initiative, titled "From Access to Agency: AI Literacy to Reduce Inequalities in Nepal", was implemented in collaboration with Ward No. 2 of Lalitpur Metropolitan City. It aimed to help community members and local government stakeholders understand AI tools, their practical applications, limitations and ethical implications.
A final sharing event was scheduled for October 9 at Shangrila Blu Hotel in Lalitpur to review lessons from the pilot and the experiences of participants who received training in June 2026.
According to the organisers, the event was designed to feature demonstrations, presentations, personal reflections and group discussions on how participants had used AI tools in their work, learning, communication and community engagement.
Participants were also expected to develop recommendations for policymakers, educators and development practitioners on digital inclusion, AI readiness and locally relevant capacity-building initiatives.
The programme emphasised practical learning, critical thinking, peer exchange and responsible technology use, aiming to help participants move beyond access to digital tools towards more informed decision-making.
"As artificial intelligence increasingly shapes social, economic, and governance systems, strengthening AI literacy is essential to ensuring that individuals and communities can engage with these technologies in informed, responsible, and meaningful ways," the project statement said.
The initiative was supported by the Atlantic Fellowship for Social and Economic Equity at the International Inequalities Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The organisers also acknowledged the involvement of Lalitpur Metropolitan City Ward No. 2, community members, journalists, project facilitators and an online volunteer with United Nations Volunteers.
